How Shifty works

Tap the microphone and talk. That's the whole app. Shifty tells jokes, riffs on today's real headlines, and — if you invite him — roasts you. There's no account, no signup, and nothing to fill in.

Shifty needs a microphone and an internet connection. He's a talking app; without those there's nothing for him to do.

Common problems

Shifty can't hear me

Make sure you allowed microphone access. On iOS: Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone → Shifty.
Check nothing else is holding the mic — a call, a voice memo, or another app already listening.
If you're on Bluetooth earbuds, try switching back to the phone's own mic.
The spotlight glows green when he's listening and red when he's talking. If it never goes green, the mic isn't reaching him.

"Couldn't get Shifty on the line"

Usually your connection dropped, or the server was waking up. Tap the mic again — the second try normally connects straight away.
If it keeps happening on a good connection, email us and say roughly when it started.

"That's your last set for today"

Shifty is free, and each device gets a set number of conversations per day so the service stays up for everyone. The counter resets daily — come back tomorrow and he's ready to go.

He keeps interrupting me / he's picking up other people

Shifty waits for a pause before replying, and filters out background voices so he can stay on one person. Somewhere loud will still confuse him. Getting closer to the mic and leaving a clear beat at the end of a sentence helps a lot.

He said something out of line

Tap ⚑ Report a response in the footer of the app. Tell us what he said — reports go straight to the developer, get read, and Shifty gets adjusted. You can also email us directly.

Shifty is built to never use slurs or make jokes about anyone's race, religion, gender, orientation, or disability. He aims at what you do and choose, never at who you are. AI still gets it wrong sometimes, and reports are how that gets fixed.

He's too rude / too tame

Tell him. Say "go easier on me" or "you can do better than that" mid-conversation and he'll adjust. If you'd rather he never roasts you, just don't invite it — he won't start on his own.

Your data

There's no account, so there's nothing to log into or delete.
Conversations aren't recorded or stored on our servers.
The only identifier is a random ID on your device, used solely for the daily limit. Delete and reinstall the app and it's gone.

Age rating

Shifty is rated 17+. The humor is edgy and the roasts are personal by design. It isn't built for children and isn't intended for anyone under 17.
